I often get the question of “where is it best to take maternity photos?”. The answer is wherever you feel comfortable and beautiful! I’m also a person who doesn’t like to choose just one thing, so a “best of both worlds” scenario is what I’m after! For maternity sessions, this could look like having it half in your home and half outside. For Anne and her growing family, we chose to split time in their neighborhood! The first half was a cozy in home maternity photography session, and the second half a one minute walk down the sidewalk to a little park!
Finding the Light
Photographer honesty time—I get a thrill from figuring out how to make you look like you’re somewhere else. By that I mean, if we had a small patch of woods in the middle of the city, it’s my honor to make it look like you’re in the wilderness! For Anne and her family, we had a little playground next to a wooded area, which worked perfectly against her grey maternity sweater dress!! Putting together the puzzle pieces is what it’s all about.
In Home Maternity Photography
For their in-home maternity photography session, we hung out in Violet’s room, and she showed me her favorite toys! She lined them up on the windowsill and then tried sitting with them herself! Hah! She was quite dismayed to find that she didn’t fit as well as her stuffed animals.
Window light is a dream. It creates a somewhat dramatic and dreamlike quality, and looks incredible on any skin tone. Natural light, man. It’s just the best.
I’m so excited to meet their little boy so soon, and for their growing family!
