Maryland Maternity: Carolyn + Patrick
Maryland Maternity Session with Sarah Laughland Photography
Patuxent River State Park
One of my favorite ways to search for sessions for my Maryland maternity photoshoots is to just drive. Simple as that, just drive around and see what I find. Carolyn and Patrick were so flexible when we were choosing locations, because we picked a place we both knew but kept it open to change that day if another spot jumped out. The main reason for doing this is that during the fall, leaves can change from day to day. So, I could go location scouting on the weekend and by the time Thursday rolls around, the leaves are gone!
For our Maryland maternity session, this was the case! I got to our original destination and discovered that it had peaked a few days prior and now looked a bit like a wasteland. I remembered I had passed a beautiful little grove a few miles back that had a reddish and gold color to it. I quickly called them and said I’d drive back that way and let them know. When I got there, well, it was just perfect. Upon further investigation I found a bamboo forest a short walk away! I’ll say that again….a BAMBOO forest. Needless to say, I am now completely smitten and will certainly take clients back to Patuxent River State Park again!
I swear, there are connections and community everywhere we go if we are willing to reach a bit. As so many people do, Carolyn and Patrick also know friends of mine from high school. But, get this. They met while honeymooning in GERMANY. Like, both couples were in Germany separately and met one day and realized they both had family in Maryland. Carolyn and Patrick lived in Texas at the time. Fast forward to 2020, they move to Maryland and COVID happens and they reconnect! It’s wild, y’all.

These two are freaking adorable. They went with me on ideas and we explored the river, the bamboo forest (still shook about it), a tiny pond that Patrick joked about falling into (gotta practice Dad jokes early, ya know?). Twas a joy and I’m so happy with how our collaboration came out! Their devotion to one another is palpable. I can’t wait to meet their family of three so soon!
