Surprise Proposal | Hannah & Kaleigh Mountain Engagement Photos

Surprise Proposal on Roan Mountain

To say that I was ecstatic to finally be a part of a big surprise proposal is an understatement. Not only are mountain engagement photos an absolute dream to capture, but these were for a very special couple.

I met Hahna Kaleigh and Hannah when they were theatre students in college. Working as an actor at the local professional theatre, we got to know and work with students. It is always a joy, and a lot of those friendships and connections still remain today. I remember thinking a few years back how effortlessly Hannah and Kaleigh fit together. Their love is rooted in such strong friendship, and it’s apparent from the moment you meet them. Truly a thing I wish for anyone who desires partnership!

Tennessee Mountain Engagement Photos

When Kaleigh came to me with her idea of a plan, I was like HECK YES. We knew we would all be visiting Southwest Virginia in April, so I started scouting around that location. Upon seeing a friends wedding photos up on this particular mountain, I started researching Roan Mountain and Carver’s Gap on the Appalachian Trail. It was perfect, as you can imagine.

A few days prior to their surprise proposal, I drove up and hiked to our desired location. Location scouting is time consuming, but seriously one of my favorite parts as it pushed me to explore new places! It’s not that repeating is bad, totally not, but getting to adventure on top of getting your photos taken is just the real deal.

The morning of, we all woke up super early and drove the couple hours to our meeting place. Hannah was under the impression that this would be a family photography session, so she was dressed for photos already. I got into place about 15 minutes ahead of them, hiding in the bushes. And yes, I do have coverage of this…

Needless to say, their surprise proposal turned mountain engagement photos was a huge success. It’s an engagement photoshoot to remember. If I ended up moving down South and becoming a Southwest Virginia photographer, you better believe I’m taking half my clients up there!

Sarah is wonderful! It's not just that she takes beautiful photos (which she obviously does!) - she is wonderfully communicative, sharp as a tack, and flexible. I had a delightful headshot/branding session with her.

I also coordinated a wedding where Sarah was the photographer and she was INCREDIBLE. A great wedding photographer requires stamina, a generous spirit, a head on a swivel, and a great eye for candid moments. She captured the spirit of the day in gorgeous images. The happy couple was so pleased!
