Soldiers Delight
Sunrise Maternity Photos
When Ashely came to me, she had a very specific vision in mind. Sunset maternity photos with a golden glow. And that’s how we ended up at Soldiers Delight.
Of course I adore this look, so I was all in. Some photographers pretty much only do that, but with the nature of my location, I don’t always get to indulge in the sunset fields.
Now, what happened for us is that sunset became a difficulty. This AMAZING couple agreed to sunrise, on a holiday Monday morning, in the middle of a nature reserve. I do believe it was well worth it.
Ashely and Holden are newer to the area. Sometimes couples have ideas for locations, places that hold special meaning, etc. Since they were farther out than my usual circle of the DC area, I had some searching to do.

Scouting is such a fun part of the work. I utilize Pinterest and Instagram a ton, exploring other photographers work. In this case, I found a photo of someone local to their home turf and reached out. She was gracious enough to give me information, all the way down to where she often parks.
Soldiers Delight, questionable in name due to the nature of it’s history as Indigenous hunting ground, has multiple things it’s known for. Now, it’s preservation of a rare serpentine ecosystem, a natural environment area underlain by serpentinite.
The rolling trails wind through woods, miniature rocky passes, and open fields. Right by the road, you can park and walk about 30 seconds before getting into golden footpaths. Sunrise or sunset, either are gorgeous reminders of history and present; both solemn and reflective, and breathtaking in what nature has to offer.
Soldiers Delight
Being the location for a photo session welcoming new life to the world, we waited for the sun to rise over the trees. Once it did, we had to work fast and we were all quite happy with the photos made that morning.
Enjoy and make sure if you visit Soldiers Delight, to read up on the history and ecosystem!
