Big Lush Plants & Flowers
You know when you have an idea right at the edge of your brain, but can’t quite visualize it yet? And then it all just comes together, the idea I mean, and you’re on your way to something special and distinctive. Big Lush Plant & Flowers is just that. It’s an eclectic, one-of-a-kind plant, vintage, and garden resource store run by three creative innovators. With a neighborhood feel, you walk in and are immediately transported and simply must spend time investigating each corner of the store (garden & all!).
What’s the big idea?
Opening in November 2019, Big Lush had a grand beginning to their business before the world shut down. After years of cultivating their own strengths and interests, everything just kind of fell into place. Their business plan was to put together plants, outdoor stuff, cool vintage stuff, basically throw it together and see what they got! All the style and aesthetics work perfectly when put together. All three of them had wanted to do something like this but finally it just made sense. They put 1000% in and just went for it.
The faces behind the storefront
Anne Warnock, Django Voris, and Mark Gagnon make up the trio that is Big Lush. Anne comes from a design background, having worked for magazines such as Vogue & Visionarie. Django is the gardener and floral designer of the bunch, utilizing organic methods and water management. Mark is an incredible artist, and you’ll find his pieces throughout the store.
Intention & Impact
Their entire store is full of repurposed items, and intentional buying practices are a cornerstone. When it comes to flowers, this means only buying seasonal flowers from local growers. Fox Haven Farm, Native Mountain Farm, and occasionally Monocacy Valley Flower Co-Op are their main partners, in addition to wild foraging.
When we as customers buy flowers, we rarely think about how there is so much that goes into it. Who grew them and are they getting paid a living wage? If they have to travel far, what was sprayed on them as a preservative? How many miles did they travel? By buying seasonal, locally-grown flowers, Big Lush keeps it all in the community and you can go home knowing no harm has been done.
A New Year
Big Lush has many exciting things in store (get it? eh?), so give them a follow on social media and definitely go check them out in Downtown Frederick on Market Street! They offer cut flowers, plants & greenery, floral design for events, as well as their collection of artwork and vintage finds!
